I am 26 years old and I am a qualified English teacher at secondary school level. I have a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English and Art History, and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from the University of Auckland. At school and university I was very motivated academically and I consistently achieved high grades.
I have three years experience of tutoring and working in New Zealand schools, teaching English to Year 9-13 students. I am very familiar with NCEA assessments, and the NZ curriculum. I have taught a full spectrum of texts, including novels, films, plays and poetry. I studied Shakespeare at every level of my undergraduate degree and am familiar with most of the plays studied under NCEA.
I find tutoring very rewarding as I am able to explain things in an in-depth way and give detailed feedback on my students’ progress. My main focus is teaching students how to improve their writing skills by showing them how to deepen their analysis of texts being studied and how to articulate their ideas with successful structure and syntax. I give students ideas but I also ensure that they develop ways of coming up with their own ideas as I know that the best learning happens when students begin thinking for themselves. I also teach strategies to help students prepare for exams by helping them to make effective notes and showing proven ways to recall this information in the exam.
